A baby on the way? Congratulations to you and your significant other. Pregnancy is an important phase in every woman’s life. Though it can bring with it a few challenges one of them being difficulty in traveling, carrying a baby inside your womb is indeed a special task. Unlike before when you could just board a bus or even a flight without a care in the world, now that you are heavy with a child, you have to be extra cautious. You just can’t pack haphazardly and head out. You and your unborn baby are very delicate. You have to ensure you bring along every item you know you’ll need during your journey to your destination and back home.

Over the same, being pregnant should not stop you from experiencing the joy of traveling the world. If someone has told you to refrain from travels until the baby comes, don’t believe them, honey. As long as you have the energy and your doctor has given you a go-ahead, you can travel to any of your favourite destinations and enjoy your babymoon.

However, don’t forget that this is quite a critical stage in your life. The life inside you is fully dependant on you. Thus you have to make the right decisions. If you are going to travel, ensure you consult with your doctor and clear any doubts. More so, make sure you pack these essentials.

Important documents

When pregnant, there are important documents you shouldn’t leave behind while travelling. The documents include:

A letter from your doctor

Before you head out for your babymoon, ensure you have a letter from your doctor indicating you are fit to travel while pregnant. We know you are pregnant and you can easily forget things but please, don’t make the mistake of leaving the house without that letter. Whether you are traveling by train, road or air, have the letter with you for the sake of your health and safety.

Contacts of a local hospital

The first thing you need to check in your travel destination is a good hospital. You need a health facility you are sure you can get medical help in case of an emergency. Hence, after you’ve done your research and identified a particular doctor or hospital, ensure you pack the contacts in your carry-on bag. That way, you won’t have to worry because, in case of anything, you’ll just contact the hospital and get help.

Prescribed medication

Even when you have a healthy baby bump, you’ll still be expected to take a few medicines with you for precautionary measures. Motion sickness, constipation and nausea are some of the conditions that can easily affect you if you are travelling while pregnant. Therefore, pack the right medication to deal with such conditions in case they occur. And don’t assume you’ll buy them at your destination in case the problem occurs, buying unprescribed drugs over the counter can be fatal to a pregnant woman.

Travel insurance

Please, for the sake of your wellbeing and that of your unborn child, don’t travel without travel insurance cover. Getting an insurance policy while pregnant is not a big challenge; the procedure is straightforward. Just ensure you read and understand what that particular policy covers before you purchase it. Hoping you’ll have a safe journey but prepare yourself in case of an emergency.

Passport validation

Nothing can be frustrating like renewing your passport while on the go particularly when pregnant. You need your passport ready since that’s an essential document while traveling. Don’t let an expired passport ruin your trip or force you to change a destination.

Suitcase

You need a good suitcase to pack your travel items. While you can choose any type of travel bag, now that you are pregnant, it would be better to choose a wheeled suitcase. You don’t want to add unnecessary weight on your back with heavy bags and backpacks which can easily cause you back pains. A wheeled travel bag is the best when travelling while pregnant. However, you can have a small backpack to hold your personal effects so that you don’t have to keep on opening your suitcase every time.

Maternity wear

Make sure you pack enough maternity wear depending on the days you will be away. As much as you intend to buy a few more clothes during your babymoon, you need to equip yourself with outfits you are sure are comfortable and make you feel good about being pregnant. That way, you won’t feel pressured to look for new outfits because you already have the ones you came with. You’ll only go shopping if that’s what you really want to do.

Among the pieces of clothing, you should pack include maternity leggings, maxi dresses, maternity trousers and tops. The good thing about fashion these days is that you don’t have to compromise on fashion due to pregnancy. There is a wide range of great maternity wear to choose from. It all depends on your taste and preference.

Snacks and water

These are two essentials you must pack when travelling for your babymoon. Cravings and hunger can make you cranky and that is something you don’t want to happen to you. So, pack healthy, nutritious and compact snacks enough to satisfy your hunger throughout the journey without worrying about delays and flight halts.

At the same time, ensure you have access to clean drinking water throughout the journey. Keeping hydrated when traveling pregnant is very important. Further, in as much as you have access to clean water, ensure you have a bottle of water inside your handbag at all times. Dehydration is an enemy to your pregnancy. It can cause contractions in the third trimester and lead to early labour.

Bump band

A bump band is a must carry when traveling for your babymoon. It’s specially designed to provide gentle support to your baby bump and prevent you from experiencing lower abdomen and back pain. It’s comfortable to wear and so you can have yours the whole day or during those moments you feel you need extra support.

Footwear

You have to be in the most comfortable footwear while traveling if you are going to enjoy your trip least you subject yourself to back pains. Avoid wearing any type of heel during your trip and settle for ballet flats in the meantime. You’ll get back to your gorgeous heels once the baby comes but for now, protect your back with flat shoes.

Pregnancy travel

If you feel you have the energy to go on a vacation and your doc has given you a go-ahead, let no one stop you. As long as you’ve packed the right travel essentials, you can be guaranteed travelling while expecting a baby will feel like a breeze.
