If you are a travel enthusiast and have been on the road since your youth, then you’ve probably realized that packing the right outfits for your trips is not as easy as it used to be. Back then, you aren’t worried about compromising your comfort just to look good. But now as years go by, your comfort is paramount.

So, how do you take care of your comfort and remain stylish? This can be a tough question considering you are no longer the sweet 20 years old pretty girl who would choose style over anything. Now, you know that comfort is equally important. Not to worry though, this article is specifically written to make sure your choice of outfits doesn’t ruin your trips. The information contained in this article will help you rock a stylish look regardless of your destination, age or season without compromising your comfort.

What to wear when travelling in your golden years

No matter where you are going and the means f transportation you’ll be using, being smart and comfortable throughout your entire journey is crucial. Here are some amazingly fast and hard rules regarding your dress code that will ensure you look fabulous on the go whether it’s just a weekend getaway, a day road trip to a remote area or an international long haul vacation.

Avoid common comfort pieces

As much as you want to be comfortable when travelling, there are certain pieces of outfits such as oversized t-shirts, shapeless dresses, unstructured suits, elastic band pants and sweaters with embroidery that are a total put off. Dressing for comfort doesn’t mean putting weird pieces of clothing that make you look like a granny who has lost hope in life while in reality, you’ve just celebrated your 60th birthday.

Again age is just a number. You are at liberty to feel as old as you wish or as young as you wish. Nothing should stop you from dressing for style and comfort. A simple fitting dress is comfortable but will still give you an elegant look.

Dress in layers

You never go wrong with layering. It’s the only way you can stay prepared for weather changes. Layering will help you keep warm when it’s cold and in case the weather changes and becomes warmer, you won’t have to deal with excess heat because you’ll just remove some pieces of your clothing without ruining your look.

Avoid new outfits

This is a very smart and important rule. Dressing in an outfit you’ve not worn before can ruin your trip in so many ways. To ensure you’ve packed the right pieces of clothes, only pack the ones you have worn previously and felt comfortable in them.

The same case with shoes, don’t wear your brand new pair of shoes when travelling. Travel with the ones you’ve worn before and you are sure they are well-fitting. New shoes may seem comfortable but as hours pass by, they may start being uncomfortable. If they are not compatible with your feet, you could reach your destination with swollen feet and you can imagine how uncomfortable your trip would be.

Choose the right fabric

Interestingly, not every fabric is suitable for travelling and choosing the right fabric can make all the difference particularly to older women whose comfort and convenience is essential. If wrinkled outfits bother you, (they actually should) avoid 100 per cent natural fibres like linen and cotton outfits. Instead, select wrinkle-resistant fabrics such as jersey, spandex, Lycra, Tencel, wool and cashmere. Polyester is also wrinkle-resistant but you may want to avoid it if you are travelling to a hot area because it doesn’t breathe and can get too hot.

Choose stretchy clothes

This is not to say you dress in some funny baggy pieces of clothes. Just that when you are travelling, you need clothes that are not too tight. You don’t want to add the discomfort that comes with long hours of travelling with tight constraining pants while you had a chance to put on stretchy outfits that’s not only comfortable but stylish as well. The good thing about stretching outfits is that the material used to make them stretches to give your body more space to relax without leaving too much space like it would have been the case if you were wearing oversized clothes.

A good jacket is a must

If there is one piece a senior woman travelling should invest in is a good-quality jacket, preferably a tailor-made one. A jacket also comes in handy when you want to pack light. If you choose yours in a neutral shade such as white, black, beige or navy, it will blend really well with all your other outfits. If you want, you can have your jacket with three-quarter sleeves length to distinguish it from your typical office jackets as well as give it a classy sophisticated look. Or a puffa jacket will be exceptional during the cold season.

Jewellery and accessories

Accessories have the power to uplift a simple outfit and give it a gorgeous look. Plus they also help you to achieve different looks with the same outfits. However, wearing too many pieces of jewellery when travelling is not a good idea. If you’ll be flying to your destination, you may have to remove them for a security check at the airport which can be time-consuming and inconvenient at the same time. Besides, getting comfortable in your seat whether you are travelling by road or air is still a challenge. Instead of all the hassle and inconveniences, why not go for a minimalist look? You can elevate your look with simple accessories like a chunky necklace paired with matching earrings and a few pieces of bracelets.

Another amazing accessory great for older women is a crossbody bag. Unlike a handbag which you have to constantly look after, a crossbody bag is practical and super easy to keep track of. You can go with any colour but for travelling, a neutral colour is optimal. If you can get one with a nice belt buckle or other interesting features such as a tassel, you’re good to go.

Style meets comfort

As a senior woman on the go, your comfort is paramount but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in style. Dressing well makes you feel good no matter your age. Moreover, being stylish shouldn’t make you uncomfortable if you’ve chosen the right outfits depending on a variety of issues such as the weather or the places you intend to go to. For instance, being fifty or even older doesn’t mean you can’t wear high heeled shoes for the few hours you’ll be having dinner with a friend or family. However, if you wear the same shoes to the airport, there will be a huge problem. The point is, a pair of heels can be incredibly stylish if worn on the right occasion but it can also be a pain on the neck if you make it your main travel footwear. Thus, it’s not a matter of compromising your style but rather, knowing what to dress at what particular time.
